Education at Chaverim
Our excellent program of Monday Hebrew School, Sunday Beit Midrash, holiday and Shabbat celebrations provides the best Jewish education possible.
Monday Hebrew School for 1st through 7th grade
Meets weekly from 4:30 to 6:30 PM
- Kitah Aleph/Bet–1st and 2nd grade: The children develop their knowledge of the aleph-bet, a beginning vocabulary of Hebrew words and prayer. Our 1st grade class also participates in a Consecration ceremony during Simchat Torah.
- Kitah Gimel/Dalet–3rd/4th grade: The children begin to read Hebrew and learn Shabbat and weekly prayers.
- Kitah Hey/Vav–4th through 6th grade: The children continue to work their way from simple brachot and prayers up through the more complicated parts of the Shabbat liturgy, studying not only the Hebrew but the meaning of the prayers.
- B’nai Mitzvah: The young adults prepare, and study both Torah cantillation and interpretation, as well as related mitzvah work.
Sunday Beit Midrash for students age 3 years (by the start of school) through 8th grade.
Meets Sundays, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Times include a half hour of electives for children in grades 1 through 7. Sunday Beit Midrash meets every other week, with some changes due to holidays.
Curriculum includes:
- Preschool/Kindergarten (children ages 3-6): My Jewish Year
- Grades 1 and 2: Being Jewish, first year; Shabbat Around the World, second year
- Grades 3 and 4: The Tanach
- Grade 5 and 6: Israel and Social Action
- Grade 7: Jewish Ethics and the Shoah
- Grade 8: Comparative religious studies, Jewish community, tsedakah and more! Includes a graduation trip to “Jewish Los Angeles” for those who complete the class.
